Os Milennials são, sobretudo, a geração dos filhos dos Boomers e Geração Jones[1]. Para entender as influências culturais na personalidade dos Millennials é preciso voltar um pouco à juventude Boomer/Jones[2]. A atmosfera era transgressora esperançosa e socialmente engajada. Naquele momento, amor livre se referia, sobretudo, ao respeito às diversas orientações sexuais (basicamente, respeito aos gays). Naquele cenário, a Psicanálise dispunha da teoria central para pensar sobre a personalidade (inclusive foi referência para a psiquiatria até o boom da farmacologia e dos exames de imagem). Grosso modo, enquanto modelo teórico explicativo para designar o que foi chamado de “transtorno mental”- sintomas cuja etiologia seja desconhecida, ela caiu como uma luva, visto que a origem dos problemas emocionais seria, em última instância, quase sempre um problema de repressão de sexual. Pois bem, a geração que batalhou por igualdades civis e liberdade sexual, criou seus filhos numa atmosfera mais livre e permissiva e era esperado que fosse assim. A geração X foi mais individualista, focada em carreira e ascensão social (dela surge o termo “workaholic”[3]), mas havia assimilado as transformações psicossociais. É uma geração essencialmente liberal (nos costumes). E a geração de pais Boomers e X? Certamente instituíram novas pautas de referências morais e são mais liberais na criação dos filhos. Quais são as consequências dessas transformações na geração seguinte? Os Millennials[4] são considerados narcisistas e indolentes. A primeira geração a viver os efeitos da transformação tecnológica é mais focada em valores individuais e em status: conquistas de performances individuais- fama, dinheiro, imagem. São também mais mimados: “aguentam menos pressão” (competição) e são mais condescendentes consigo mesmos[5]. São, por outro lado, fruto da transformação que já havia se enraizado em uma nova forma de vida e se estabelecido como normalidade: são genuinamente abertos (open-minded) tanto no que toca às liberdades sexuais, quanto a estilos de vida. São, por fim, fruto da transformação social e tecnológica antecedente: são uma geração que contesta e vive o que vamos chamar de “era das negociações”.

POST 6-MILLENNIALS/Y-GENERATION ME-ME-ME
Millennials are the following generation, mainly boomers but also Jones’[1] sons and daughters. We have to go back a little bit to their youth in order to understand cultural influences on Millennials’ personalities[2]. The atmosphere was disruptive, hopeful and socially engaged. By that time, “free love” meant respect to sexual orientation diversity (especially gays’ rights). In that context, Psychoanalysis had the strongest theory to understand personality and was, by the way, psychiatry most important reference until the urge of pharmacology and images’ scan. Altogether, as a theoretical model to understand what’s become known as mental disorders (unknown causes’ disorders) has fitted like a glove once their causes would always be, in the end, sexual repression issues.
Well, it is expected that a generation that has fought for civil rights and sexual freedom raise their kids in a freer and more permissive way. Generation X is more focused on career and social mobility -they are called workaholic[3]-but have assimilated psychosocial changes. It means that they are essentially liberals regarding behaviours. And what aboutBoomers and X as parents? They have certainly founded new moral guidelines, which are expressed in the way they raise their kids. And what are the consequences of these changes to the following generation? Millennials[4] are considered narcissistic and lazy. This generation experiences the first effects of technological revolution and is still more focused and worried about status: fame, money, image. They are also considered spoiled as they can’t handle pressure (competition). It’s the urge of burn-outs, depression, anxieties.They are also more self-indulgent[5] and, on the other hand, they are the result of such deep social changes in subjectivity. They are genuinely open-minded regarding sexual freedom and diversity in ways of life. In psychological terms, this generation expresses the impact of social and technological transformation and could be called an “inquisitive generation”. They have given birth to a negotiation era.
